With his distinct vocals, his ability to constantly explore new sides of his musicality in an uncompromising and curious way and a special talent for writing captivating melodies, Jacob Bellens has over the past 20 years positioned himself as one of the most significant figures on the Danish music scene. He is a genuine pop auteur who, despite his experimental and changeable nature, is always easily identifiable, as the deeply personal imprint and great presence in the songwriting runs like a common thread throughout his musical work.
Throughout his career, Jacob Bellens has been the main figure in several prominent musical contexts. He has been publishing music since 2004, when he released the album “Scandinavian South” with the electronic project Livstrompet. Since then, there have been three critically acclaimed and beautifully understated albums with musical partner Anders Mathiasen in the folk duo Murder, and five albums as the lead singer and songwriter in the premiere Danish indie rock band of the new millennium, I Got You On Tape, several of which today enjoy the status of prized cult classics.
Most recently, with the reactivated I Got You On Tape, he released the album “0” in spring 2023, which contains the very first record that the original constellation of the group complet- ed back in 2004, but which has never seen the light of day until now, almost 20 years after it was recorded. In addition, Jacob Bellens has collaborated with a myriad of different Danish artists such as Peder, Kasper Bjørke and AV AV AV and written material for other musicians such as Emil Kruse, Benal, Vera and Selma Higgins.
For the past ten years, he has primarily distinguished himself as a soloist. Jacob Bellens’ solo debut “The Daisy Age” was released in 2012, an analog and minimalist album that was recorded live on tape in the studio. In stark contrast was his next solo release “My Convictions” from 2014, which featured Bellens’ personal interpretation of classic and grandiose vintage pop, complete with horns, strings, and woodwinds from the Warsaw Radio Orchestra.
On his third solo album “Polyester Skin” from 2016, Bellens again walked new musical paths. The electronically based production was created in close collaboration with the Danish DJ and producer Kasper Bjørke. The album contains one of Bellens’ biggest hits, “Untouchable”.
The introspective and self-reflective album “Trail Of Intuition” followed in 2018, where Bellens presented a series of musical snapshots that moved across the entire emotional spectrum with a catchy pop approach. It was followed by “My Heart Is Hungry And The Days Go By So Quickly” from 2020, which showed a more organic and band-oriented side of the singer and songwriter’s musical universe.
In the fall of 2023, Jacob Bellens will release his sixth solo album “Off My Meds”. An album with a more crafted sound, where Bellens has found inspiration in funk and 00’s R’n’B, and which thematically is rounded off having been created during a tumultuous period characterized by a deep personal crisis. This has resulted in some of the most direct and unfiltered songs from Jacob Bellens’ hand to date. The man himself has catagorized the upcoming album as “an optimistic record about personal accountability”.
Prior to the album release, the single “Doing Fine” has been released. It is a song created in collaboration with the up-and-coming young pop comet M.I.L.K.
